Western Art Academy summer workshop scholarships are selected through an application process. Application forms are given to all 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students who are Best of Show, Gold Medal or Special Merit winners in the annual School Art competition. Completed applications are submitted to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo School Art Committee. Representatives of the Western Art Academy interview each qualifying applicant and review their application and artwork portfolio. The number of participants selected each year is determined by the amount of funds available. Winners are announced at the School Art Program Awards Ceremony during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
In San Antonio, the Western Art Contest and Exhibit was created to recognize and reward the many outstanding student artists interested in western art. The contest occurs in December and entries are displayed during the annual San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo.
The annual Western Art Contest & Auction takes place during the final Sunday of the Stock Show & Rodeo in the New Frontier Club located on the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo grounds. The Western Art Auction is held to auction the top 25 placing art entries from December's art contest. The top pieces will be auctioned to the highest bidder resulting in scholarships for the student artists. In addition, selected students are invited to participate in a three week Western Art Academy program at Schreiner University.
